Do you really need a Class A Drivers License?
If you plan to pull your horse trailer in California and it has a GVWR(Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 10,000 pounds or more the answer is YES, you will need your CDL license. The process is not an easy one either. You must complete an application and pay the necessary fee, submit a health questionnaire, pass a basic class C law test, pass the non-commercial A law test, pass a vision test, pass a pre-inspection test, pass a skills test, and finally pass the driving test. Go to the California DMV website for more information. I am just starting the process and it is indeed overwhelming. There are classes you can take to help you through the process. There are a few driving companies that offer CDL training, so search for one in the area in which you live. I have heard that if you are pulled over and do not have a Class A license the officer can hold your vehicle (with horses) until someone with a license can drive the vehicle home. It is no joke. Unfortunately, we live in a state that is holding hard and fast to this requirement, so don’t ignore it. Good luck and be safe out there!
