Are Facades Always Bad?
On a recent vacation to Disneyland without children, I was able to really focus may attention on the finite details the Disney corporation puts into their theme park. I think when I traveled here in the past with my small children, all the small details went unnoticed because I experienced the larger picture of Disneyland. They have done such a great job of creating such a wholesome atmosphere combined with loved characters that the children adore. When I was here with my youngest son we spent the whole day looking for Mickey!
My visit this time was such a different experience and I noticed so many more of the details. For example: the themed music that changes as you walk a path to match the theme of the area; the plants and flowers that also match the theme; the light fixtures, paint, furniture....every small detail.
The dictionary defines Facade as "an outward appearance that is maintained to conceal a less pleasant or creditable reality." I would classify Disneyland as a Facade, but in a good way. What a wonderful experience to be able to escape the reality of the world with all its imperfections and for a short moment take in an experience where even the trash can are pretty. It is truly a Magical Kingdom!
