How to Keep your Horse from Losing a Shoe

I have been competing in barrel racing for a very long time. Over the years I have struggled (especially with the barrel horse I ride now) with my horse either losing a horseshoe in the pasture or catching a shoe during a competitive run. Not only is it scary to have your horse catch a horseshoe during a run, it is downright dangerous and it negatively affects the time of your run.

I had a Farrier share with me a few years ago that many of his clients who compete in Cutting Shows tape their horse’s shoes to avoid catching them. He demonstrated for me how to use duct tape and electrical tape to fill in the gap in the back of my horses shoe. I will show you here on YouTube.

I keep a size large ERS Centaur Double Thick Bottom Bell boots on my horse all the time to avoid him pulling a shoe in the pasture. When I am competing with my horse I use this taping technique and also add a Classic Equine Dyno No-Turn Overreach Bell Boots to be used under the rubber bell boot. This has worked awesome for my horse and I rarely have a problem losing a shoe. It’s brilliant!
