The Top 3 Things to Optimize Your Horse's Health this Fall

As Summer comes to an end, we welcome a new season. Fall is always beautiful here in Northern California.  The leaves are starting to fall and the days and evening are cooling, but this is a critical time that we must pay close attention to some fundamental things when it comes to the health of our horses.

The most important thing to watch is your horses water intake.  Just like us, horses tend to drink more water when the weather is hot outside.  When the weather cools they will naturally drink less and that can slow gut movement.  My vet recommends that I add a few pinches of plain salt to my horses grain.  It is an inexpensive way to insure that they drink more water.

The second thing to pay special attention to is your horse’s hoof health.   When winter arrives your horse’s feet will be subjected to mud and wet weather.  Now is the time to make sure that you are optimizing hoof care, so that you can start the wet season with healthy hooves.  Keep feet clean and moisturize if needed.  My farrier recommends that I use Coconut oil on my horses hooves a few times a week.  It moisturizes as well as acts like a repellent to any outside moisture. Hoof supplements may also help strengthen equine feet in the winter. Some farriers recommend the use of feed supplements for stronger hooves in many cases. Equine hoof supplements may contain biotin, amino acids and other healthy ingredients to strengthen hoofs, but no hoof supplement can substitute for a healthy equine diet.  There are many choices of hoof supplements on the market, so please see my blog comparing the top two hoof supplements choices here.

The final thing to help get your horse ready for the changing weather, is to look at the condition of your horse blankets. When we have our first chilly night, you will want to be prepared. If you are like me, I have my blankets hanging in the barn, dirty from last season and probably in need of some repairs. Check with your local feed store to find someone in your area who may offer cleaning and repair services.  If you are in need of a new horse blanket, I have done some shopping around and found the best blankets at the best price. By taking necessary steps watching your horses intake of water, making sure that you are managing their hoof care and protecting them from inclement weather with a blanket, the changing seasons can be safe and invigorating for both horses and owners.
